Gay eager to open Family FunFest
By Aimee Sachs, Staff Writer
Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback William Gay remembers his childhood Fourth of July tradition of sitting in the old Wal-Mart parking lot on Apalachee Parkway and watching the fireworks from Tom Brown Park.
The 24-year-old Rickards High graduate has come a long way since then. The Super Bowl XLIII champion is starting what he hopes to be a new Fourth of July tradition Saturday the Family FunFest at Jack McLean Park.
"I always wanted to do something just to give back and show my appreciation to my community," Gay said. (more)

Superbowl Champ Gives Back
Former Rickards Raider stand out William Gay has seen his share of fireworks in the last year. The Pittsburgh Steeler cornerback helped his team to a 12-4 regular season record, and their 2nd Superbowl title in four years.
So it's no surprise then that Gay chose July 4th to begin his first annual Family Funfest...With the help of Winn Dixie and others, Gay put on a day of free games and free food at Jack McLean park in Tallahassee.
This isn't the first time he's given back to the community he was raised in. He's also donated money and cleats, and even spoken to students at Rickards High. (more)
Several people got together Saturday at Jack Mclean Park in Tallahassee for a barbecue hosted by Pittsburgh Steeler, William Gay.
Called the Independence Day Family Fun Fest, the Super Bowl champion teamed up with Winn-Dixie to grill up some hamburgers, hotdogs and chicken, drinks and snacks.
The Fun Fest assisted the Character Center, which helps at-risk children struggling with learning disabilities.
Kids enjoyed games, a bounce house, and snow cones at the event.
Gay, who graduated from Rickards High School says if it wasn't for the people in the community where he grew up, he might not have been as successful.

Autograph signing supports Derrick Thomas charity
By Wayne Grayson, Staff Writer
In the 33 years he was alive, Derrick Thomas sacked hundreds of quarterbacks, but he also touched the lives of many people. Former Crimson Tide linebacker Dwayne Rudd counts himself in the latter group.
Derrick Thomas was the reason I came to Alabama, said Rudd, who played in the NFL from 1997-2003. He was a major influence on my career and the way that I view the game of football.
Rudd was one of several former Tide standouts who attended an autograph signing Friday night at University Mall which benefited the Third and Long Foundation, a charity Thomas started in 1990, 10 years before his death. The foundation works to increase literacy among inner-city youth.
Thomas was recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and will be enshrined Aug. 8 in Canton, Ohio. Rudd said he wishes Thomas was alive to accept the honor.
Its just a tough thing to swallow that he wont be here to accept it himself, he said.
Thomas died in February 2000 after a car wreck that left him paralyzed. (more)
